Open source PIM: the licence is free, the operation is not.
We sell a commercial PIM, so read this with that in mind. It is still worth writing, because the honest comparison is not free against paid. It is which costs you would rather carry, and open source is genuinely the right answer for some teams.

What is actually free
The licence, not the system.
An open source PIM gives you the application and the right to run and modify it. What it does not give you is a running system. Somebody has to provision the servers and database, configure storage for assets, set up backups and test restores, apply upgrades, monitor the queue workers that most of these systems depend on, and respond when the import job stops at three in the morning.
For an organisation that already runs infrastructure and has engineers with capacity, that is a known and manageable cost. For a catalog team with no dedicated engineer, it is the whole project, and it is usually underestimated because the evaluation focuses on features rather than on operations.

Community and enterprise
Read carefully which features are in the free edition.
Several well-known PIM products are open core: a community edition is genuinely open source, and a commercial edition adds the capabilities larger teams tend to need, which often include workflow and approval features, advanced permissions, publishing connectors, and support. That is a legitimate business model, but it means a feature list on the product website may describe the paid edition.
Before choosing, list the capabilities you require, then check each one against the community edition specifically. Approval workflow, granular attribute permissions and channel connectors are the three most likely to sit behind the commercial line.

When open source is right
Three situations where it is clearly the better choice.
First, when you have an unusual data model that no product supports and engineers who can implement it. Source access removes a hard ceiling. Second, when data residency or isolation requirements make a hosted service difficult, and you would be self-hosting anyway. Third, when the catalog is small and stable, the team is technical, and the operational burden is genuinely low.
The situation where it usually goes wrong is the opposite one: a non-technical catalog team choosing open source to avoid a subscription, then discovering that the work they wanted to eliminate has simply moved from a supplier invoice to their own evenings.

- A genuine intent to contribute back rather than to fork and drift
Our position
What Nexodo does instead, stated plainly.
Nexodo is a hosted commercial PIM aimed at manufacturers, importers and distributors with supplier-heavy catalogs. It is deliberately narrower than a general platform: supplier evidence, review and approval, quality rules, assets, feeds, portals, product sheets and controlled Shopify publishing. It is not open source and does not offer source access.
The comparison that matters is not licence cost. It is whether your team wants to own the operation of a system or the outcome of a catalog. If your evaluation concludes that source access is the deciding requirement, an open source PIM is the correct choice and you should take it.

Which open source PIM systems exist?+
Several projects are actively developed, including community editions of established commercial products and independent projects. Rather than trust any vendor's list, check the current activity on each project's repository: recent releases, open issue volume and how long serious issues stay open tell you more than a feature table.
Is open source PIM secure?+
The code being public is not the risk. The risk is unpatched deployments. Open source shifts responsibility for applying security updates to you, so the honest question is whether your team will apply them promptly, month after month.
What does self-hosting really cost?+
Budget the servers, object storage for assets, database, backups and their restore testing, monitoring, and engineering time for upgrades. Engineering time is the item most often left out and usually the largest.
Can I migrate later if I start with open source?+
Usually yes, and it is easier if you keep the data model clean and avoid deep customisation. Migration cost scales with how far you forked from the upstream product, not with how much data you hold.
