A digital asset management system is authoritative for the file: its master version, its renditions, its usage rights, its expiry, and the creative approval that let it out of the studio. A product information management system is authoritative for the relationship between an approved asset and a product, and for what a specific channel receives.

Conflict only occurs where both systems hold the same field, which in practice is a short list. Assign each one and the integration becomes a data exchange rather than a negotiation.

Lifecycle

Five events, and the integration is only as good as its worst one.

Almost every failed PIM and DAM integration works on the first upload and breaks afterwards, because the connector was specified for creation and not for change. These five events are the whole specification.

Test each one deliberately during evaluation, with a real asset attached to a real product, and watch what the storefront shows afterwards. A connector that cannot answer all five will leave stale images in front of customers.

Revision: a new version of an existing asset, and whether products follow it
Expiry: rights lapse, and what the channel is sent from that moment
Deletion: the file is removed, and whether the product reference dangles
Reassignment: the asset moves to a different product or role
Rendition change: a new size is generated, and which channels pick it up

Do you need both

Most catalogs need product-attached assets, not a creative platform.

A dedicated DAM earns its cost when there is real creative production to manage: multiple agencies, licensed photography with expiry dates, brand campaigns, video, and reuse far beyond product pages. Those are marketing organization problems.

A catalog whose media is supplier-provided product photography and PDF datasheets usually does not have that problem. What it has is an assignment and completeness problem, which is a PIM capability. Buying a DAM for it adds a system without removing the actual work.
